Masking Tape For Painting and Warehouse Needs
There's a masking tape to suit your need...whether you're a professional painter, doing automotive refinishing, or needing light packaging applications. There are four different grades of masking tape...premium, general, medium and utility. If you're a professional painter, then premium grade is for you. It has a smooth texture and clean removal. Next, there's general grade which is the industry standard and is designed for paint contractors. This tape has a rubber adhesive. Medium grade can be used for light packaging applications and is moisture resistant. Finally, the utility grade has a solventless adhesive and is best when temperature applications aren't an issue. This grade of tape can also be used for bundling, holding and sealing non-critical masking jobs in your warehouse, garage, etc. If you're needing an automotive application, there's also automotive refinishing tape which removes cleanly even at temperatures up to 250° F. Because it's heat and solvent resistant, it performs well in most painting applications. When longer applications are required, there are tapes that can be left on from 7 to 14 days without leaving a residue. This tape is called Weatherable masking tape and is moisture resistant. Rolls per case This tape comes in widths anywhere from 1/2" to 3" and typically has 60 yds/rl. These tapes are typically sold in cases as follows: | Tape | Rolls/Case |
|---|
| 1/2" | 72 | | 3/4" | 48 | | 1" | 36 | | 1 1/2" | 24 | | 2" | 24 | | 3" | 16 |
Application method While a lot of masking tape applications can be done by hand, masking tape dispensers are also available. These dispensers are inexpensive and help make application very easy. Temperature Ranges Tape works best when applied at the right temperature. Manufacturers recommend the following room temperatures: | Tape | Temperature Range |
|---|
| Industrial | up to 250°F (30 min.) | | General | up to 200°F (1 hour) | | Medium | up to 200°F (30 min.) | | Utility | up to 150°F (30 min.) | | Automotive Refinishing | up to 250˚F (30 min.) |
If the tape needs to withstand higher temperatures, high temperature tape is available and can handle heat from 310° to 325° F. Available Colors and Thickness While most masking tape comes in a natural color, you will find some in blue, black, orange, white, etc. Colors are great for color coding products and shipments. When it comes to tape strength the thicker the tape the stronger the tape. Tape thickness is measured in mils…the higher the mil measurement the stronger the tape. Buyer Beware When comparing the cost of tape make sure to compare apples to apples. Look at the: • Yards/rl • Rolls per case • Thickness (mils)
